We defend federal charges statewide, in the U.S. District Courts for both the Eastern and Western Districts of Missouri. Federal cases move differently from state cases. State criminal defense
We defend all felony charges in Missouri’s state courts, centered in Boone, Callaway, and Cole Counties (the 13th and 19th Judicial Circuits), with representation available in other counties by arrangement. At the misdemeanor level, we focus on DUI and assault.

For many matters we offer a flat fee agreed in advance, so you understand the cost of your defense up front rather than watching an hourly meter run.
What moves the number
The charge itself, the court it is in, whether it is state or federal, how much investigation it needs, and how far the case is likely to go. A felony headed for trial is not priced like a first-time misdemeanor.
We quote the fee before you retain us, and we explain what it covers. Where a case genuinely cannot be quoted as a flat fee, we say why rather than papering over it.

We prepare every case as if it is going to trial, hold the government to its burden of proof, and pursue the best result the facts and the law allow. Most cases resolve before trial. The preparation is what makes that resolution a good one.

Litigate before trial
Motions to suppress and pretrial challenges are where many cases are won. Evidence that should not be in the case is evidence the State cannot use.

What is the difference between a criminal lawyer and a defense attorney?
In everyday use they mean the same thing. “Criminal lawyer” covers anyone working in criminal law, which includes prosecutors. A criminal defense attorney represents the person accused. What matters more than the label is whether the lawyer regularly defends cases like yours, in the courts where yours is filed.
When should I hire a criminal defense attorney?
As soon as you know you are a subject of an investigation, and certainly before any interview with law enforcement. You do not need to wait for a charge. Decisions made in the first days often shape everything that follows.
How much does a criminal defense lawyer cost in Missouri?

Should I talk to the police before I have a lawyer?
Generally, no. You have the right to decline an interview and to have counsel present. Officers are permitted to build a case from what you say, and explanations offered without advice frequently make matters worse rather than better.

What happens at my first court date?
Your first appearance is short and it is not where your case is decided. The court confirms the charge, addresses bond, and sets the matter forward. What matters is that you understand what you are actually facing and that nothing is said that hurts you later.
