About Vindex Law, PC

A Missouri firm built on a single conviction: the rights and liberties of the people are not the government’s to take.

Our mission

We stand between the government and the people it accuses.

Vindex Law, PC defends the accused in criminal court, pursues justice for those whose civil rights have been violated, and carries the fight to Missouri’s appellate courts. Every client deserves a defense prepared with care, conducted with professionalism, and delivered with respect.

Our name

Why “Vindex”

When we look back at the founding laws of this nation, we tend to turn to the writings of men like John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. But years before these great minds took up their quills, Samuel Adams was writing against governmental tyranny and the oppression of the people’s rights under the pseudonym Vindex.

First published in 1768, Adams took the name from the Roman senator Gaius Julius Vindex (who lived from about 25 to 60 C.E.), who led a rebellion against Emperor Nero and his oppressive rule, unjust taxes, and destruction of the people’s republic. Educated in the classics of ancient Roman history, Adams mirrored his persona in the image of Vindex on the eve of the American Revolution. Like his fellow patriots, Adams believed the rights and liberties of the people were not to be infringed upon by the government. In 1768, he wrote:

“That constitution which admits of a power within a check, admits of a tyranny: And that the people, who are not always on their guard, to make sure of the remedy of the constitution, when there is one, to restrain all kinds of power, especially the military, from growing exorbitant, must blame themselves for the mischief that may befall them in consequence of their inattention…”
Samuel Adams, writing as Vindex, 1768

These words reflected his belief that power lies within the people, not in the absolutist rule of government. Like Adams, our firm believes the rights and liberties of our clients must be upheld and protected through adequate and just legal representation.

Our crest

Why a pineapple?

Just as with our name, our logo draws on the foundations of our country and the symbols of the eighteenth century. The “pyne fruit” was first introduced to English explorers in the 16th century, and by the 18th century it had become a symbol of hospitality.

In Virginia especially, returning sea captains would place a pineapple on the gate posts outside their homes to signal that they had come home from their voyages, and that all who passed by were welcome to share food, stories, and tales of the long journey. By the 18th century, men of high renown could afford pineapples and displayed them at their homes during joyous occasions.

At Vindex Law, we wanted a symbol of that same hospitality and our willingness to listen to the stories of the people we serve, so our scales of justice are crowned with a pineapple. Hospitality, welcome, listening, and honest conversation between our firm and the people we represent are at the heart of how we practice.
