Student and Young Adult Defense in Columbia

For college students and young adults charged in Columbia Municipal Court or Boone County. We defend the case with the degree, the record, and the career in mind.

A charge that looks minor at 20 can follow someone into a nursing license, a bar application, a medical residency, or a securities exam years later. The right outcome for a student is not just the one that ends the case. It is the one that protects what comes after.

Two courts

Which court is my Columbia case in?

Most student cases in Columbia go to one of two courts, and the difference matters.

Columbia Municipal Court

Handles violations of City of Columbia ordinances. It is a division of the Boone County Circuit Court in the 13th Judicial Circuit, located at 600 E. Broadway. A defendant who asks for a jury trial has the case certified to a circuit or associate circuit judge under Missouri Supreme Court Rule 37.61.

Boone County Circuit Court

Handles state charges, including every felony. Drug, weapons, and assault charges filed by the Boone County prosecutor are heard here. See our Columbia criminal defense page.

What we handle

What charges do you handle for students?

  • Municipal ordinance cases in Columbia Municipal Court: minor in possession, open container, peace disturbance, false ID, stealing, trespass, property damage, resisting or obstructing, and municipal assault.
  • DWI in municipal or state court, including marijuana DWI.
  • Felony drug charges, including possession and distribution.
  • Weapons charges.
  • Assault in municipal or state court.

We do not handle routine traffic tickets such as speeding or equipment violations.

The university side

Can the University of Missouri discipline me for a criminal charge?

Yes, and the university process runs separately from the court case.

How the process works

At the University of Missouri, the Office of Student Accountability & Support handles student conduct under Chapter 200 of the University of Missouri System’s Collected Rules and Regulations. Reports can come from the university police, housing, and others. The rules allow the university to act on some off-campus conduct, not just conduct on campus.

Why it needs to be coordinated

What a student says in a conduct meeting can matter in the criminal case, and the reverse. The timing of the two processes rarely lines up. Talk to your lawyer before you meet with the university about anything connected to the charge.

We advise students through the conduct process alongside the criminal case, and we help them prepare for and attend conduct meetings and hearings where the university’s procedures allow an advisor.

The long view

What is at stake for a student beyond the case?

  • Professional licenses. Nursing, teaching, law, medicine, real estate, and securities licensing all ask about criminal history, and many boards can act on a guilty plea even when an SIS avoids a conviction. See how a criminal charge affects a professional license.
  • The record. Municipal cases appear on Missouri Case.net, and ordinance violations count toward Missouri’s lifetime limits on expungement.
  • Financial aid. A drug conviction no longer affects federal student aid, but scholarships and other programs can have their own rules.
  • International students. A criminal charge can carry immigration consequences. Get immigration advice before any plea.

For parents

How can parents help after a student is charged?

Parents often make the first call, and we are glad to talk with you.

The student is the client

Even when a parent pays the fee, the student is the client. What the student tells us is confidential, and we share it with family only with the student’s permission. That protection belongs to the student.

Protect the case

Do not ask what happened on a recorded jail call or in a text message, and do not contact anyone involved. See what families should do after an arrest.

Answers

Student defense questions we hear

Do I need a lawyer for a municipal charge like minor in possession?

It is not required, but the record and its effect on future applications are often worth protecting. A municipal case can appear on Missouri Case.net and in background checks, and how it is resolved matters later.

Can the University of Missouri discipline me for something that happened off campus?

In some circumstances, yes. The University of Missouri System’s Collected Rules allow the university to act on off-campus conduct that affects the safety and well-being of the university community or interferes with university activities.

Should I talk to the university before my criminal case is resolved?

Talk to your lawyer first. What you say in the conduct process can affect the criminal case, and the two processes need to be handled together.

Can my parents talk to my lawyer?

Parents are welcome to call and can pay the fee, but the student is the client. The lawyer shares information with parents only with the student’s permission.

Can a municipal case go to a jury?

Yes. A defendant in municipal court can request a jury trial, and the case is then certified to a circuit or associate circuit judge under Missouri Supreme Court Rule 37.61.
